20 Simple Home Remedies

  • SIMPLE HOME REMEDIES AND HINTS
  •  For simple household burns, caused by touching a hot iron in the wrong place, or grasping an overheated saucepan handle, and the like, gently pat lavender oil over the sore part. This will not only take away the pain, but will help to heal the skin tissue.
  • For a sweet-smelling bathroom, pour a few drops of a flower oil on to the spout of the hot tap and turn it on for a few moments to release the fragrance. The floral aroma will fill the room for some time.
  •  During a flea plague, fresh pennyroyal sprigs, or oil of pennyroyal, should be rubbed into the coats of dogs and cats. If fleas invade the house, put sprigs of pennyroyal wherever you can, even under mattresses. If you do not have fresh pennyroyal, use pennyroyal oil, which is even more concentrated.
  • Insect bites are alleviated by rubbing the skin with fresh sage leaves. The pain of a bee-sting is lessened if the area is rubbed with fresh leaves of winter or summer savory — after first removing the sting.
  •  Lavender oil rubbed into some of the furniture, or bunches of fresh lavender in vases, helps to keep houseflies at bay. A posy of rue, tansy, wormwood, and elder leaves is excellent for this purpose too.
  • Chewing strawberries will prevent the formation of tartar on your teeth.
  •  Cinnamon bark pieces, dried wormwood leaves, and the dried leaves of tansy and mint crumbled together and put into muslin bags will help keep moths and silverfish away from cupboards and drawers.
  • For restless legs syndrome, during the night, put your legs in a bath of hot water up to the calves and pour in a few drops of soothing lavender oil. Soak them for five minutes, rubbing gently with a washer. Dry your legs and go back to bed. It helps the condition, but does not cure it.
  • Plant tansy near entrances to the house to prevent the small, black summer flies that somehow find a way inside, in spite of fly screens. (This has been proved effective by us.) Tansy, together with rue, wormwood, lavender, and a small elder tree planted around a barbecue area has the same effect. Sprays of tansy placed on an outdoor buffet also help to repel flies. Unfortunately it is too bitter to eat.
  • A strong wormwood tea, cooled, and poured on the tracks of slugs and snails in spring and autumn (fall) will deter them.
  • Bronchitis and tightness of the chest
Chop a garlic small and put into a jar of petroleum jelly (vaseline). Stand on a warm hob for a few days. When cold, massage freely into back and chest.
  •  To relieve a heavy cold
Grate horseradish and inhale the fumes that arise.
  • Anti-moth herbs 1
A handful each of dried and crumbled santoli-na, wormwood, mint, tansy; half a stick of cinnamon cut up small. A few dried pyrethrum flowers.
  •  Anti-moth herbs 2
A handful each of lavender, rosemary, southernwood, thyme. A little pennyroyal, Vz oz (14g) crushed cloves, small piece of dried lemon peel.
